Can’t wait to experience some of the things I read about in Chicago in this great little guide. Highly recommend.

Subtitled, "A Woman’s Solo Trek Across 1,700 Miles of Australian Outback," this 1980 book by Robyn Davidson, then 30 years old, is now considered a classic. She did it alone, with four camels, a loyal dog, and all the self-doubt and introspection that make her very human. Ms. Davidson grew up in Adelaide, a city in Southern Australia, but she traveled to the Central Australian town of Alice Springs, arriving with just $6 in her pocket and a desire to learn about camels. She worked in a bar and apprenticed herself to a camel owner, performing menial jobs and learning all she could. It took two years and half the book, but finally she was ready to pursue her dream.
She never was able to accumulate the funds needed to outfit her camels and so she applied for and received a grant from National Geographic. Throughout the book she questions that decision because this meant she had to meet with a photographer on several parts of her journey as well as an onslaught of unwanted publicity. In her mind, the trip became less the pure expedition she had envisioned and there is much soul searching about this. This is not the only thing she constantly reflects about though. Throughout her 7-month trip, she questions everything, even at times, her own sanity. I learned not only about the harsh Australian Outback, the pleasures and problems of living with camels, and the plight of the Aboriginal people she met along the way. I also shared every nuance of her fears and inner journey, which was as complex and richly landscaped as the harsh and beautiful land around her and found myself laughing out loud at times at her offbeat sense of humor.
This book is a true story by a determined Australian woman who crossed one of the most inhospitable stretches of land in the world – a wide swathe of treelees dry scrubland which is most of Australia’s center and its northern half.
I especially enjoyed this Australian classic, having just visited the remarkable and idyosyncractic town of Alice Springs where the early part of the book is set. This is where the author learns how to tame, care for, live with, and depend on camels for survival, as she prepares for the dramatic trek which lies ahead.
The rage against the male photographer who keeps showing up – the compromising aspect of her compact with her sponsors at National Geographic – is at times shocking, leaving one to wonder whether the author has more sympathy for her camels than fellow human beings. But this impression is deceptive. The mostly male characters who populate her book hardly seem caricatured, while the camels do emerge as a woman’s best friend in the outback. "One does not have to delve too deeply to discover why some of the world’s angriest feminists breathed crisp blue Australian air during their formative years, before packing their kangaroo-skin bags and scurrying to London or New York or any place where the antipodean machismo would fade gently from their battle-scarred consciousness like some grisly nightmare at dawn. Anyone who has worked in a men-only bar in Alice Springs will know what I mean."
The rage, courage, vulnerability, determination, and other emotions and qualities which this trek depicts, almost seem like a metaphor for the complex place of the outback in the Australian experience. "It was delicious new country but it was tiring.

I do not normally write reviews on , but I felt that I should after reading through this book.
I learned how to use Linux years ago with an earlier edition of the Linux Bible, and this edition has built well on top of that. The changes to Linux over the years have been mind-boggling, but Christopher Negus has covered them extremely well. For example, with systemd making its way into virtually all Linux distributions in the last couple of years, he’s dedicated a whole chapter (chapter 15) to introducing the classic init system, Upstart, and systemd, as well as detailing how to use each of the three systems well. He covers all the little tricks that you need to know to use it well and take advantage of the capabilities of systemd, too.
He uses Fedora and RHEL for his examples and such, but that’s absolutely fine even if you use a Debian-based distribution or some other distribution family (like Arch, Gentoo, or Slackware). He covers the differences between RPM and Debian based distributions well (and to be honest, there aren’t all that many anymore, they are mostly centered around the software distribution scheme these days).
This book takes a different tack from earlier editions I’ve read, as it is structured more to help you learn and provides exercises that can be done to get that knowledge to really sink in. I’ve found it incredibly helpful to be able to have the exercises to practice what I’m reading, as I’m more of a "learn by doing" kind of guy.
Christopher Negus’ Linux Bible continues to be one of the best books to keep on my reference bookshelf.

ok, i bought this week couple weeks ago to prepare for my FF1 and 2 Arizona state exam. my exam was literaly about 30mins ago. i have yet to get my pass/fail on it but i can tell ya i guarantee i passed. ALOT of the questions i encountered were directly from this book. i highly recommend it to anyone testing.
i plan on buying the aircraft portion as well.

I bought this book because I wanted to get prepared for my Fire Fighter II test. I have completed the entire testing and really enjoyed the way they had all of the questions set-up. As you keep taking the test it manages to keep you working and learning harder each time. There are about 750 questions total so the book really gets you dialed in for the test. After the quizzes they have a section on how to prepare you mentally and physically for the test and how to control any test anxiety. Over all I would recommend this book to anyone who is getting ready to test.
I bought this book and it completely helped on the Fire Fighter I exam. I scored a 95%, which was higher than I anticipated, but this book made me feel very confident, which was what I was looking for. I also passed the Fire Fighter II with this book. 84% on FFII.
I was really surprised how many questions on the exam I had seen in this book. It was the first exam that I was actually amused taking it because I had seen everything before. In the end, I am glad I bought it because confidence never hurts!!

this is a good book for basic troubleshooting technique for charging and starting systems .good coverage of voltage drops ,continuity checks, dvom symbols . It covers basic lighting and dash instrumentation as well. However this book is virtually devoid of the wiring schematics that I encountered on the ASEA6 test I took yesterday.The test is 75% wiring schematics of various complex circuits. I have 20 years or so of automotive service in which I have encountered quite a few wiring difficulties but even with this experience and these study guides I found it to be a very tough test. I did pass the test but with a lower score than the other tests I’ve used these books for. Don’t get me wrong Delmar puts out a quality product but this book is obviously flawed in the wiring diagram section of the test. on my a5 and a7 test I missed only a couple of questions on each test but this test was a mindbender with 90 minutes to answer 60 questions which are just about all tricky schematics.
This test prep book is ok, but may leave some people with false confidence. I took the ASE A6 and passed the exam. This book was helpful in the fact that it gets you prepared for ASE style questions, but the real ASE A6 exam is NO WHERE NEAR similar to the practice exams.
I had heard or read several things along the way in preparing for this test, so here are some facts that applied to my situation. I had been told that the real exam was 75%-80% schematics. Keep in mind the A6 is 60 questions long. 10 questions are considered "research" questions and do not count toward your final score (however, you are unaware of which 10 questions those are). Out of the 60 questions on the A6 exam, I encoutered 36 questions that included a wiring schematic or a diagram of some type. That ends up being 60% of the test. Also, for those of you that do not care for the technician A, technician B questions, I had 13 Tech A/B questions, or about 22% of the test.
The Delmar test prep has very few questions with wiring diagrams / schematics. If you find reading a schematic difficult, or don’t understand how a circuit works in a wiring diagram, I suggest that you spend A LOT of time figuring that out before taking the actual A6.
I have also read the Motor Age / Delmar test prep debates. I purchased both A6 study guides, and both lacked the amount of wiring diagrams I feel should be included in sample questions.
In conclusion, I hope this helps someone before taking the A6. The test prep book gets you in the right mindset of electrical theory & diagnosis, but if you can’t apply it to a circuit or schematic drawing, you may find the A6 test difficult
This book is worth every penny and more. I am studying for the ASE A6 Electrical examination. Electrical is my weakest auto technician area and this book is stuffed with questions and answered. I am sure I’ll see a lot of them on the test, or at least almost the same as in the book. Most importantly I know what they are looking for in an answer. It also has a cross reference to the test study areas of the exam. I’m going to buy the who series ! I’m a tough rater, but this is 5 STARS !
